What to know about using cannabis topicals to address common skin concerns
Let’s face it – developing an effective personalized skin care regimen can involve plenty of trial-and-error exploration; and if you have eczema, acne, sun damage or signs of aging, soothing troubled skin can feel like a never-ending battle. So, it’s not surprising women of all ages are beginning to reach for cannabis topicals on the quest for clear and healthy skin.
Known for possessing anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-aging properties and omega fatty acids, cannabis topicals are being sought after for their reputedly effective and lasting effects in skin care. Because our skin has a low absorption rate for cannabinoids, we’re able to observe the benefits of cannabis topically without experiencing the ‘high’ associated with cannabis. Below are some ways cannabis can be added to enhance your daily skin care routine.
Many of us know the feeling of waking up after a night on the town, or sleep training a babe-in-arms. Perhaps you dozed off in your makeup, and you definitely you got much less sleep than you are used to. Now you can feel the bags under your eyes – and maybe a pimple or two – starting to form. For a morning-after fix, mixing CBD-infused coconut oil into your face lotion is said to add anti-inflammatory properties that will help with redness and irritation caused by lack of sleep.
CBD – the non-intoxicating cannabinoid – contains vitamins A and D, which are largely responsible for skin repair; they will work to get rid of the bags under your eyes and return any redness to normal. This is primarily because vitamin A is needed for cell growth, so adding a bit to face cream will promote a healthy glow. As well, if you are worried about any redness or acne from sleeping in your makeup, CBD contains omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which will help regenerate the skin’s outer layer, reducing redness and making it smoother.
Keeping your skin protected from the sun’s powerful rays is one of the best ways to keep it healthy and happy. Applying SPF regularly is important, but adding some THC or CBD oil into your SPF could really bring sun protection to the next level. Cannabis oil provides cannabinoids in their most potent form, meaning that when applied topically, the detoxifying agents and antioxidants known to be in cannabis can work quickly and effectively. The antioxidants present in THC and CBD are vitamins E and C, which work to remove damaging and oxidizing agents – such as the sun’s rays – from your skin’s surface. By adding cannabis oil to your daily dose of SPF, you can potentially protect your skin’s elastin and collagen fibers from being damaged by UV rays. And if you’ve gone a bit too far after a day in the sun, cannabis oil can also address post-sun care.
If you are beginning to notice – or want to prevent – signs of aging, antioxidants (in particular vitamins A and E, as well as omega fatty acids) have been said help reduce the look of spots and wrinkles. Omega-6, present in CBD, works as a building block for your skin’s surface layer. When applied topically, omega acids help to create a smoother and more even appearance, and also increase hydration, allowing the signs of aging to fade. The antioxidants in CBD work to inhibit free radical protection, meaning vitamins A and E will also help protect the skin from further damage. By adding a CBD topical to your nightly routine, you can help slow down the aging process, making your skin look younger overnight.
Whatever your age, adding cannabis to your skin care routine has the potential to provide numerous benefits, allowing you to feel your best in the skin you are in.
